THE SHORT ANSWER

A prototype primarily explores or tests a represented solution. An MVP evaluates value through sufficiently realistic use. They can overlap, but they do not automatically answer the same questions.

Choose the format around the question

An interactive prototype may be enough to test whether navigation is understood. Observing repeated use with a customer’s own data usually requires more working behaviour. Do not ask a mockup to prove service reliability.

QuestionPossible format
Is the promise understood?Page or demonstration
Is the journey clear?Interactive prototype
Is the result useful?Pilot service or MVP
Do users return?Observed use over time

Make simulation explicit

Explain what is simulated. A payment screen that processes no transaction is not a billing system. A prewritten AI response may demonstrate an interface without demonstrating model quality.

Avoid accidental production code

A prototype may be intentionally disposable. Moving its implementation directly into production can preserve unsuitable shortcuts. Identify what must be rebuilt or verified: permissions, storage, errors, tests and operations.

Is prototyping a delay?

It is useful when it resolves uncertainty that would be more expensive to discover after engineering. It becomes unnecessary when it merely redraws settled decisions without enabling another test. Give the prototype phase a defined learning objective and stop when that objective is met.

Match the artefact to the question

A clickable prototype may be enough to test whether labels are understood. It cannot establish the accuracy of automated classification on real inputs. To observe voluntary return use, participants need a genuinely usable way to complete the underlying task.

In a fictional booking product, the prototype can test comprehension of the calendar. An MVP must also handle simultaneous requests, cancellation and role-specific visibility. A smooth mock-up does not demonstrate those behaviours. Select the implementation depth according to the evidence you need, rather than according to which artefact is easiest to produce.

Prevent overinterpretation

Explain what is simulated before the session. Do not present a prerecorded response time as measured system performance. Observe hesitation and reasoning, not only the clicks that complete the script.

Afterwards, list what the test supports and what remains unknown. An understandable prototype may justify building a pilot; it does not establish willingness to pay or operational reliability. Keeping that boundary explicit protects subsequent budget decisions and prevents stakeholders from treating a convincing demo as a completed product.
