THE SHORT ANSWER

Useful AI cost includes the calls, retries and review needed to finish a workflow. The price of one model request does not describe the economics of the customer outcome.

Choose an observable unit

For a fictional case-response assistant, include retrieval, generation, retries and human review. Segment short cases from long document bundles. One average can conceal a small but expensive customer population.

Model more than one workload

Use explicit assumptions rather than treating an old supplier price as a constant. Combine task volume, observed consumption and applicable rates, then include other operating costs. Compare ordinary work with difficult document sets and check current supplier pricing when preparing a budget.

How should costs be bounded?

Set understandable limits on input length, retries and usage. Silent truncation that leaves a task incomplete is a product failure. Explain the limit and offer an alternative path. Track cost together with quality and completed outcomes; a cheaper response that requires extensive correction may be the more expensive workflow.

Long-tail workloads need their own scenario

Include a customer who repeatedly submits long multilingual documents rather than only short demonstration prompts. Record successful completion and review effort for that workload. Pricing or usage limits based solely on a small demo set can misrepresent the operating envelope.
